How long should my bra last, & how many should I have?
This is a popular 2-part question and our answer is always “it depends.”
- How often do you wear it?
- How do you put it on?
- How well do you take care of it?
In general, we say a bra that is worn 3+ days each week shouldn’t have a birthday. If you have one bra it will last 3-4 months at best. (Be sure to check out our Laundering Your Intimates How-To)
Bras are made from a variety of quality fabrics (including elastic) and are created to stretch when worn and then return to their original shape. Wearing the same bra every day minimizes its ability to go back to its original form. Just like a rubber band being stretched and then held in that same position for an extended period of time, your bra will begin to stay in that stretched out position.
There are so many bra types and styles that to define “how many” comes down to a matter of preference. We recommend 3-4 everyday-wear bras, at a minimum. These are bras that work with the majority of your clothes and are usually what we call a “smooth cup.”
Lace, low plunge, demi, full cup, low back, and strapless bras might also be in your lingerie wardrobe. As well as sports bras for athletic activities. (Note: It is extremely important for your breast tissue to not bounce while you’re working out. Whether you walk, run, CrossFit, ride horses, play hockey, wrestle, etc. you need a well-fitting comfortable sports bra. Depending on the number of days you work out, you will want 2-4 sports bras.)
Your clothing wardrobe, personal style, and lifestyle, will determine the bras which are best for you. However, you might have always looked at a dress or top that needs a strapless bra and you disregard it because you don’t have or can’t find a bra that will work. Come and see us first. We’ll help you with options. Then, go shopping.
